Snowshoe Winter Trek

Just because it's winter doesn't mean you can't go hiking!

Join us for a three day introduction to the backcountry, with the security of your guide.

Slap on those snowshoes or if you can ski or board bring these along and venture out for a tour of the Pisa range close to Wanaka and Queenstown.

This is the easy way to cruise over rolling hills and experience what the backcountry touring buzz is about. If you're on skis or snowboard, this may even be your chance to experience your first turns down a virgin snow slope.    You don't need any technical gear such as axes and crampons, but you will need to carry your personal clothes and a sleeping bag to the hut. We will aim to tour with a light day pack each day.

You will come away with:

* Two nights in a very wild and scenic backcountry hut
* an introduction to avalanche transceivers
* practice using avalanche transceivers
* techniques using updated touring gear
* improved transition time - downhill to uphill

Aspiring Guides provide a relaxed way to learn the basics of snowshoeing, snowboard, telemark, alpine or nordic touring.

Kirtle Burn hut is a DoC hut and has 7 bunks. We spend two nights here in the Pisa Range Conservation Area. Huts are on a first come first served basis. Awake high in the mountains ready for more.

 

 

Logistics

Duration :  3 days plus 1 day weather contingency

Price:

NZ$950 per person ex-Wanaka (2 - 3 pax)
NZ$650 per person ex-Wanaka (4 or more pax)

Access:  Tour-in, tour-out

Guide Ratio:     1 guide : 6 clients maximum (minimum 2)

Prerequisites:  Good fitness, no previous experience. 

Accommodation:  Department of Conservation Hut.

Bonus:  Weather contingency:   In case the weather is unfavourable at the start of the trip.  A great bonus. This one day could apply to the START of your trip (day one could be delayed by a day)
