Aritza Monasterio is one of our fantastic long-time guides, one of those types who climbs a 5,000+ meter peak and then rides his bike hundreds of kilometers afterward just to take a dip in the ocean. Motivated, driven, and vastly experienced! Not only does he guide ascents of Mt Aspiring and Aoraki/Mt Cook here in New Zealand, he also leads a 19-day expedition (“Tres Montanas”) for us in the mountains of Peru, his other backyard, which includes multiple ascents and the ultimate goal, Chopicalqui (6,354m).
Peru's Cordillera Blanca is a high altitude range with its own unique set of challenges, such as glacier travel, 80 degree ice climbing, and elevations well above 6,000m. As the head honcho of mountain guiding in Huarez, having guided there over 25 years, Aritza is the perfect man to prepare you for these difficult peaks, utilizing our local mountains to help you develop the skills you'll need.
Working with Aritza here in New Zealand is a special opportunity for those who are keen to join our Peru expedition, as you'll get experience with your guide as well as get a significant NZ ascent under your belt. Experience of this kind is a prerequisite of the Tres Montanas trip, as it requires a high level of endurance and fitness, and previous experience with crampons and ice axe is necessary.
Together with Aritza, we are offering a 6 day course based out of Mt Aspiring National Park with Peru-specific training. With a maximum of two clients, you’ll get focused learning and practice at the highest level, culminating with a guided ascent of a local peak to incorporate the challenges you’ll experience in Peru.
Colin Todd Hut is an excellent base with several objectives at hand for training days and summits. You’ll get technical training, such as glacier travel, ice and mixed climbing, and ropework, at a manageable altitude to lock in critical skills before moving up in elevation.
This is the ideal method to prepare for your Tres Montanas trip with Aritza in June 2019, or for a future expedition.
